Have you ever taken the public transformation system in Massachusetts?
Did you feel uncomfortable?
Is it not rewarding to take the T and you just rather go by car?
My team and I came up with a new idea in order to solve these problems. This project was in collaboration with Tunde Akindele, the acting executive director of technology strategies of Verizon. For this project, it was assumed that Verizon would be the main sponsor of the project.
Identified Problems
Individual Operators
Lack of collaboration between privately owned public transformation providers
No Unified System
The lack of an integrated digitized platform is due to a deficit of the current structural budget.
Outdated Equipment
Outdated equipment that fails in cold weather situations.
Customer Service
Customer Service is
not present at all stops
Ticket System
Tickets cannot always be bought at each station/stop. Online purchases can takes days to be processed on the traveling card.
Inaccurate Information
Long travel and waiting times due to inaccurate transportation information

The team decided to solve the problem with 5G-Enabled Internet of Things (IoT) equipment, which involves sensors, wired/wireless connectivity, devices, a mobile application, and a database to store the data collected (Ranger, 2020).

Benchmarking SMART-public transportation systems that are implemented in the Netherlands and Austria helped us decide the following:

It can enable more accurate demand planning and inventory with the data collected.

It can act as the basis for infrastructure monitoring.
It can create an enhanced customer experience through the data collected.
It can collect data and money in real-time through QR-code scanners.
Geo-fencing can be used in order to tap into different traveling needs during trips.
It can enable better pricing systems through algorithms.
The (UX) Design
Account Set-Up

The design follows a traditional way on how to set up an account. Prefilled information can be used by connecting it with social media. Funds can be added directly to the account by requiring payment information.

Customer Service

As customer service is lacking in the current system, online representatives would be able to take calls and support live chat. It also supports options to read local news and listen to music.

Planning Ride

Due to the new technology equipment, the recommendations and routes are accurate. It suggests the routes based on time and crowdedness. The app will give directions on how to walk and show you live updates . Once the user is ready to board, their personal QR can be scanned when boarding.

In-App Ads & Profile

Through Geo-fencing, the app will know based on the travel time whether there is some time to get for instance a snack or a coffee while you are waiting. Each time the customer travels, green computer rewards are collected. Through our partners, these can be exchanged for food consumption or travel discounts. The customer is also able to decide whether they want daily tickets or a subscription.
